Threefold Defense, Kehinde Wiley (United States, b. 1977), 2007. Oil and enamel on canvas, 84 x 96 inches.
The image depicts three individuals in casual attire, each engaged in a posture that indicates some form of defensive stance. The background is adorned with a richly detailed floral pattern consisting of blue, white, red, and yellow colors. The three individuals are positioned in front of this backdrop; their gazes look directly to the viewer and appear serious in nature. From left to right the first individual is wearing a dark T-shirt with white text and designs on it and holds a yellow stick in their left hand. The middle person is clad in a pink sleeveless top and mustard-colored pants with his right arm held to his chest with a fist over this heart and his left arm outstretched with his hand open wide. The third individual wears a striped shirt with multiple colors, a baseball hat backwards on his head and has a stick in his left hand that crosses over the stomach and chest area of the individual in the middle. All three individuals appear to be mid-motion given the dynamic positioning of their limbs and bodies. Flowers from the background superimpose the bottom half of all three figures making each look like they are adorned with white flower patterns.
