Inspired by the symbiotic relationship linking humankind and the animal world, Carlos Llerena Aguirre explores co-existence on an increasingly fragile planet in his new exhibition, Últimas Tribus (Last Tribes). This show features close to a dozen large format woodcuts, several of which were created during the artist’s recent residency at the Venice Printmaking Studio on the island of Murano. They speak to Llerena Aguirre’s rich sources of inspiration, including traditional Japanese woodblock prints, the Norwegian painter and printmaker Edvard Munch, the Mexican printmaker and engraver José Guadalupe Posada, and the work of the German Expressionists.
Complementing Llerena Aguirre’s graphic work will be a selection of his video art, including the recent Saynatakuna, Masks and Transfigurations in Paukartambo. Carlo Llerena Aguirre’s video art has been screened in film festivals around the world and his woodcuts – which are held in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress – have been published in numerous international journals, books, magazines, children’s books, and newspapers. Llerena Aguirre is currently a tenured professor at the University of Miami.
