Unequal Lovers by Peter de Grebber Unequal Lovers by Peter de Grebber

Unequal Lovers, Pieter de Grebber (The Netherlands, ca. 1600-1653), ca. 1650, oil on canvas, 57 3/4 x 42 in. Gift of Colonel C. Michael Paul

The artwork has two central figures. The figures look to be engaged in a struggle or some form of physical interaction as they both exhibit dynamic postures suggesting movement or action. The clothing of the individual on the left is richly detailed and colorful. This individual appears to be male from their facial features. He is wearing a vibrant blue top with gold embellishments and holding a red and black cloth. This person also has a large ornament or necklace made of large metallic looking beads running from his neck to his navel and is wearing an elaborate headpiece. The second person on the right is clad in dark clothing with a hood. It is not clear if this individual is male or female from their facial features. They have a red and black striped patterned cloth locked within their mouth that they appear to be trying to take from the individual on the left. The figure on the right has an undergarment that is white or light-colored. The background is plain and does not contain any significant details.
